On this day in 1879, the first Woolworth’s store opened, in Utica, New York. Dubbed “The Great Five Cent Store,” poor location led to an early closure after only two months. The second store, which opened on June 21 in the same year, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was successful, jump starting the birth of the world-wide retail enterprise.

On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley gained his first hit when “Heartbreak Hotel” edged into Billboard’s top 10 music chart. The number one song on this date: “Lisbon Antigua” by Nelson Riddle. “Heartbreak Hotel” climbed to number one on April 11 the same year and remained in the top spot for 8 weeks.
