On this day in 1804, the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase began. Chase was blamed for making decisions based on political preference, including court cases that involved treason and sedition. The U.S. House found sufficient grounds to bring him to trial but the vote in the Senate was short of the two-thirds majority necessary for conviction.

On this day in 1895, the first automobile race in the United States was held. The event was held in Jackson Park, Chicago, and consisted of a 54-mile round trip to Evanston, Illinois. Six vehicles participated and the winner was Frank Duryea with an average speed of about 7 miles per hour.
