On this day in 1958, the United States entered the space age with the launch of the satellite Explorer I (officially called Satellite 1958 Alpha) from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 10:48 PM EST. Explorer I was built in 84 days, a task rushed in response to the Soviet launch of Sputnik I the previous October.

On this day in 1798, a debate on the floor of Congress over potential U.S. involvement in a European war escalated into violence. Representatives Matthew Lyon from Vermont and Roger Griswold from Connecticut climaxed an argument with Lyon spitting tobacco juice in Griswold’s face. Griswold retaliated by attacking Lyon with a cane. The tobacco spitting incident was the first recorded instance of violence in the U.S. House. The House attempt to discipline Lyon in response was also a first; the legislatures failed to gain the two-thirds majority needed for expulsion.

On this day in 1934, a hotel in Woodstock, Vermont, put the first rope tow for skiers in the U.S. into operation. It was powered by an engine from a Ford Model A and carried skiers about 900 feet.

On this day in 1837, Michigan became the 26th state in the United States after a prolonged political fight to gain control of the “Toledo Strip,” claimed by both the state of Ohio and the Michigan Territory. As a compromise, Ohio got the disputed Toledo land and Michigan got its statehood.

On this day in 1908, Julia Ward Howe became the first woman elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters, with members voting 35 to 4 in favor. Mark Twain had earlier seconded her nomination. An early supporter of women’s suffrage, Howe was a poet and writer; her most noted work is the lyrics to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
