On this day in 1909, garment factory workers in New York City began a strike to protest unsafe working conditions. Dubbed the Uprising of the 20,000, the strike lasted 14 weeks and ended with a settlement that included most of the factories in the city. One holdout was the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, site of a major fire a few years later (March 25, 1911), which killed 146 workers, most of them women.

On this day in 1794, the British ship Butterworth entered Honolulu Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands, the first foreign vessel to drop anchor here. Captain William Brown dubbed it Fair Haven and other ship captains originally referred to the location as Brown’s Harbor, but the native designation won out in the long run (Hawaiians refer to the land site as Honolulu; the harbor itself is called Kuloloia).

On this day in 1969, Native American activists invaded Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, the site of the abandoned Alcatraz Federal Prison. The Indians occupied the island to demonstrate their right to reclaim native lands; they surrendered on June 11, 1971, after 19 months.
